The "Clip/Track", "Detail View", "Device On/Off" and Metronome buttons save me so much time and unnecessary mouse clicking (I hate using the mouse unless I'm editing waveforms). What I like about the transport on the APC is how its dedicated to Ableton.

APC40 MK2s hardware controls correspond to Lives interface, so you can plug in and play without MIDI-mapping each control first. I've worked this way before too, and there's no doubt that it's handy for what it is, but I find that a) I'm faster just dragging and dropping and b) the APC doesn't serve much of a function after this point, save for faders/knobs/transport, which I handle using my ReMOTE SL. Then he presses the master record button, and for lack of a better word, uses the APC to "perform" his track using the clips/variations he created in session view, thereby creating audio files in arrangement, which will later be tweaked/mixed/finalized to make the track.

He sounds like he has some analog gear, so no audio has been rendered yet, he's just coming up with ideas and seeing how different sounds fit together. I know I can change that in the Configuration settings in Beyond. When I load the APC40 profile, it changes the grid to 8 columns, 6 rows.

I have just finished reading the section on midi control from the user guide. So he probably starts by coming up with ideas for the different parts in session view, creating variations etc. So I have purchased an Akai APC40 (not MKII) on eBay.
